Summary: This wiki page shows how to get started with Scaleway, one of the upcoming European Cloud Providers.
Date: 5 June 2026
Scaleway is one of the upcoming European Cloud Provides and provides a European alternative for the US cloud giants. It's originally from France, but has datacenters in France, the Netherlands, Poland and Italy. I already have some Scaleway experience and want to experiment a bit more with it, to find out if it truly is an alternative.
Getting started is obviously the first step. Scaleway offers a Account Quickstart guide, so let's follow that.
When clicking to Sign Up, I immediately get a choice of logging in with a Google, Microsoft or Github account. I convenientlty have a company Microsft Account, so let's use that one. After logging in I have to enter some personal data and confirm my email address. After that I can set up my Organization Profile. I picked the Freelancer, and setup my GetShifting Organization name.
Here the signup process fails. I get errors, but, I somehow manage to login.
After login I have to decide between using Scaleway and Dedibox. Choosing for Scaleway, the login procedure continues where it was, and I have to provide more personal details. And then I get to the payment details.
Note the message: We will send you an authorization charge of €1 which will be automatically reimbursed within two days.
Then I get to create my first project. I name the project 'shift' and continue.
I am now logged and it's clear they really want you to use it. I didn't know but apparently I got 100 euro free credit and 56 days to use. That's quite generous and should be enough to some tests.
There are also some scattered todo's to get to know the console. By clicking on them you get small pieces of information that will help you to understand the console quickly. Mark them done if you're done or no longer want to be bothered by them. Note that you have the option to verify your account using an official ID. This will unlock some console limits.
When working with the console some things might just work a bit different when compared to the US cloud giants. I will keep a list here that will allow you to land as smoothly in Scaleway as possible, so check the page every now and then for updates:
As a first deployment I will create a new project and deploy a kubernetes cluster in a private network. This is a very important feature, as we would not want our kubernetes cluster be available directly over the public internet.
